"The animals of the Manor Farm, inspired by the dream of the pig Old Major, rebel against their owner Mr. Jones and take over the farm. They rename the farm Animal Farm and begin to run it themselves, led by the pigs.
The two pigs that head the farm are Napoleon and Snowball, who disagree on everything. One day, as the animals are about to vote on the building of a windmill that Snowball supports and Napoleon opposes, Napoleon has Snowball driven off the farm. From that point on, Snowball becomes a scapegoat whenever anything goes wrong on the farm.
As time goes on, the pigs begin to break many of the original principles and Commandments of their Rebellion. This is justified by slight changes in the wording of the Seven Commandments and by explanations from Squealer, a particularly eloquent and persuasive pig, which convince the animals that their memories of the past are incorrect. Eventually, as more time passes, the pigs become indistinguishable from their human predecessors, the name of the farm is changed back to Manor Farm, and the situation is much as it was when the book began.
